Rainbow Hippie Floral Arrangements

60s Party by Bunny Baubles Blog 3

As you all know, I threw a 60’s party a couple of weeks ago and I went a little crazy on the psychedelic/groovy decor. I had a lot of paper chains, tons of peace signs, and a little war propaganda, but I really went overboard when it came to the flowers. I had always wanted a reason to go to the store and buy as many flowers as I could carry, so I figured this would be the best time to do so seeing as I was channeling my inner hippie.

Once I arrived home and laid all the flowers out on the counter, I realized I had little to no plan for what to do with them. Since the best decorations are simple decorations, I went where any 60’s inspired party goer would go – RAINBOW! A handful of mason jars and a little food coloring go a long way when paired with simple flowers to really add a fun touch to your floral arrangements.

I used a couple varieties of chrysanthemums and mini daisies to create a hippie-chic look, while also saving a pretty penny (the flowers only cost about $12 total!). Might I add that they are still going strong 12 days later? Since I spend so much time setting up for these parties, I enjoyed the fact that I could keep the good vibrations going long after my guests had left. Try this out for your next 60’s, hippie, pride, or summer themed party… or really just to bring a little joy to any normal day!

DIY Rainbow Hippie Floral Arrangements

Supplies:

6 Mason Jars
1 bunch of White, Quill Chrysanthemums
1 bunch of Green, Pompon Chrysanthemums
1 bunch of Mini Daisies
Red, Yellow, and Blue Food Coloring

1. Fill your mason jars halfway with water. To create the rainbow colors, add the following drops of food coloring to each jar and stir combine:

  • Red = 2 drops of red dye
  • Orange = 1 drop of red dye, 2 drops of yellow dye
  • Yellow = 1 drop of yellow dye
  • Green = 2 drops of yellow dye, 1 drop of blue dye
  • Blue = 1 drop of blue dye
  • Purple = 1 drop of blue dye, 1 drop of red dye

2. Cut all of your stems down so they are about 4-5″ taller than the height of your mason jars (TIP: Cut the stems at an angle to allow more water to soak into the flowers).

3. Arrange your flowers. I liked to have a few white, quill chrysanthemums and a few green, pompon ones in each jar. I also cut some of them a little shorter than the others to add variation to the height of the arrangements. Finish each arrangement off with sprigs of mini daisies throughout the bouquets.

4. Best displayed with beams of sunshine coming in through the window, set your vases up on a table where the colors can really shine through.
