Floral Summer Skirt Sewing Tutorial

Floral Summer Skirt Sewing Tutorial by Bunny Baubles 7

Summer in Houston is a sweaty time. Kyle and I went mini golfing last Saturday night and we thought, wow it feels really nice out… only to realize 15 minutes later that we were sweating profusely because it was still 85 DEGREES AT 11 PM. 6 AM, 10 PM, just accept it, you’ll be sweating.

With the never ending heat on my mind, I have found myself wearing a lot more skirts lately because they are so airy and light. I love wearing things that are easy, comfortable, and colorful in the Summer, so when I found this Koko Lee fabric I just knew I needed to make a skirt out of it. There’s nothing crazy about it, but a simple skirt in a fun pattern can really create a big impact on its own.

Floral Summer Skirt Sewing Instructions

1. Cut your fabric in to two rectangles as shown in the instructions above. One rectangle will be the WAIST and should be 5″ x your waist measurement + 2″. The other will be the SKIRT and should be 21″ x 2 times your waist measurement.

2. Take the SKIRT fabric and sew a straight stitch along one of the long sides without sewing backwards to tie off either end. Pull on the loose strings at the ends while holding the fabric to allow it to scrunch up. Do this until the skirt is about two inches longer than your waist. Tie off the ends to secure the width of the skirt at this length. For more instructions on how to make a ruffle, see my how to make a ruffle tutorial.

3. Next, take your WAIST fabric and fold the long edges over about 1/4″. Iron these down and pin them to secure. Sew along these edges with a straight stitch. Then fold the entire WAIST piece over the long way and iron down.

4. Pin the WAIST to the SKIRT so the sewn edges of the WAIST cover the scrunched part of the SKIRT on either side of the fabric. Sew with a straight stitch along the very edge of the WAIST piece to secure it to the SKIRT. I then sewed another seam about 1/4″ away from this one to make the waist band look more professional.

5. To install the invisible zipper, unzip the zipper and iron it so that the teeth are flattened out along one side. Pin the entirely flat side of the zipper to the edges of the skirt, starting at the top of the waist and pinning down to the end of the zipper. Using an invisible sewing foot, sew down the zipper. Then, turn the skirt inside out and sew up the rest of the skirt in the back so it is completely closed. I always reference this invisible zipper sewing tutorial video when I need a little refresher on this.

6. The last step on the skirt is to hem it at the bottom. I hemmed mine to right above my knee to keep the floral pattern from looking frumpy, so it was about 20″ long. For tips on hemming, check out my how to hem a skirt tutorial.

    1. Yes that’s the best way to try it out!! Really you could make this for about $5 with cheap fabric and then closer to $10 with coupons and the fabric I showed here 🙂
