DIY Fur Pillow Cases

DIY Fur Pillow Case by Bunny Baubles Blog

This post should not be coming as any surprise, seeing as I told you I was totally gung ho about redecorating my new sofa with none other than fur pillows. They are all over the place in the stores, and I think that they give a really nice contrast in texture to a modern space. I shopped around and found some beautiful ones at Target, Pottery Barn, and Overstock, but none of them had removable pillow cases! There’s no way that furry pillow is not going to need a wash every once in a while…

Though the fabric stores near me didn’t have much faux fur that I was interested in (I realize fur is not in high demand in Houston, especially after Halloween), IKEA never ceases to have my back. They have real sheepskin rugs for $30, but they sell fake ones for only $13! I’m a bargain hunter, and the faux rugs were quite fluffy when compared to the real ones, so I opted for the cheaper option. With one rug I was able to make one medium sized pillow case and one small one, perfect to fit over these two pillows (1,2) that I got for a steal at IKEA.

This is pretty similar to the case I made for my tribal print pillows for my bedroom, but there are some special tips for working with the fur. Are you dying to lay your head down on one of these babies yet? Because I definitely am jealous of my sofa as I sit in my office working away, sans fur pillow. Oh, did someone say sofa? Yes, it arrived. I have barely left it’s side 🙂

DIY Fur Pillows

Supplies:

(makes 1 medium and 1 small pillow)
1 Real or faux sheepskin rug
1 yard White upholstery fabric (or similar strong material)
1 Small (about 14″ x 14″) and 1 Large sized (about 20″ x 20″) pillow
White thread
Sewing machine
Pins
Scissors
Measuring tape

1. Measure your pillows and then cut squares the same size out of the sheepskin rug. You should be able to tell that there is a larger and smaller side to the rug so you can use the larger one for the large pillow and the smaller one for the small pillow. Also, when you are cutting the fur, make sure to cut with small movements so you do not accidentally trim the hairs off the rug that you want on your pillow! Then cut two rectangles out of the white upholstery fabric for each pillow that are the same height as your pillows and 7″ shorter in width for the large pillow and 4″ shorter for the small pillow.

2. Take your white fabric and fold the height side over about 1/4″ and pin. Repeat on all rectangles. Sew along the pins and then repeat for all pieces of fabric.

3. Lay your sheepskin fabric face up and then lay your two rectangles upside down on top of it, overlapping in the middle where you have just hemmed the edges. Pin around all four sides of the pillow, and sew about 1/4″ from the edge of the fabric.

4. Flip the case inside out and stuff your pillow inside. If it is not as tight as you would like (some pillows are more filled than others), you can flip the case back inside out and sew about 1/2″ from the edge or more to make it smaller. Trim off the excess once you get to the desired size. Throw it on the couch and flaunt your chic style!
